A lot of people ask my advice when they want their dogs to behave differently and fit better into their household and lifestyle. While there are certainly lots of things you can do to train your dog and set her/him up for success (which starts with adopting a dog who is a good fit – work with your rescue to determine this), the simple fact is this: don’t expect your dog to do all the changing. It’s a two way street. You need to adapt to your dog, too. When you bring a living, feeling, sentient being into your home, your life is going to change. Time and consistency will certainly help (Iook for a future post on this), but if you don’t expect or want your life to change at all, do everyone a favor and
get a stuffed animal!
